How it works

The original GLP-1 for weight loss.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — it mimics the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 that your gut naturally releases after you eat. GLP-1 plays a central role in how you feel full, how quickly food leaves your stomach, and how your body regulates blood sugar.

By activating the GLP-1 receptor more strongly and for longer than the body's own signal, Wegovy reduces appetite, slows gastric emptying, and improves blood sugar control. The effect is that you feel fuller sooner and for longer after eating. Like all weight-loss medications, it works alongside dietary and activity changes — not as a replacement for them.

Wegovy was the first medication in this class to be licensed by the MHRA specifically for weight management in adults with obesity, or with overweight plus a weight-related health condition. It's a prescription-only medicine and must be prescribed by a UK-registered clinician after proper assessment.
