The medicines
How do Mounjaro and Wegovy actually work?
Both are once-weekly injections from a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists; Mounjaro (tirzepatide) also acts on a second receptor called GIP. They work with your body's own appetite signals — slowing how quickly your stomach empties, helping you feel full sooner and for longer, and quietening the constant "food noise" that drives snacking — so you naturally eat less.
Mounjaro or Wegovy — which is right for me?
Mounjaro has shown the highest average weight loss of any UK-licensed option and works on two appetite pathways, while Wegovy has a longer real-world track record. Neither is automatically better — the right choice depends on your health history, your other medicines and how well you tolerate treatment, and your prescriber recommends one with you at your consultation.
Safety & using it
What are the common side effects?
Most side effects are digestive — nausea, constipation, diarrhoea or indigestion — and are most noticeable when you first start or move up a dose. They are usually mild and settle as your body adjusts, which is why we start low and increase slowly. Rarely, more serious problems such as pancreatitis or gallbladder issues can occur, so a clinician reviews you regularly and tells you which warning signs to watch for.
How and where do I inject it?
It is a once-a-week injection from a pre-filled pen, given just under the skin of your tummy, thigh or upper arm, rotating the site each week. The needle is short and fine, and most people find it quick and nearly painless. Clear instructions are included, and you can add a sharps bin and alcohol swabs to your order.
Getting started & trust
I'm already on treatment elsewhere — can I switch without starting over?
Yes. If you share evidence of your current medicine and dose, our prescriber can usually continue you at the right strength, so there is no gap in supply and no going back to the starter dose. You upload that evidence securely after your ID check and before booking your consultation.
Will my GP be involved?
You can access The Weight Clinic privately and do not need a GP referral. As part of your consent to treatment, we will inform your GP if treatment is prescribed, so your medical record stays up to date and your care remains joined up. Our prescriber may also view relevant information in your NHS record via the National Care Records Service as part of your assessment.
Are you properly regulated?
Yes — fully, and you can check it yourself. Our medicines are dispensed by our own pharmacy, North Harrow Pharmacy (509 Pinner Road, North Harrow, Harrow HA2 6EH), registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC number 1034996) and overseen by a named Superintendent Pharmacist, Andrew Lane. Every treatment is prescribed by a GPhC-registered independent prescriber on our team and dispensed by our own pharmacy — not a third-party warehouse. We supply only MHRA-licensed medicines, never unlicensed or 'grey-market' products, and we're registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and comply with the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) for how we handle your personal and health data. You can confirm our registration at any time on the GPhC's online register.
